Comment: I started good and had very good rhythm in the first set. Nichol served and returned well in the second set, and I couldn’t find my rhythm. The third set was really tough. It was in fact the mental game. I tried to fight for every point, and I’m really happy that I won.

  1. Q: You were once the No.1 player in Asia. And now Li’s ranking is a little bit ahead. Can you give us some comments on Chinese women players?

A: There are many good Chinese women players now, like Li Na. And there are more coming up. I once saw many Chinese girls practicing tennis. I think it was great for Chinese and Asian tennis. There were once seven or eight Japanese players in the top 100, but not any more.

  2. Q: You have decided not to attend the Asian Games. If that happened in China, the player will face a lot of pressure. Is that the same circumstances in Japan?

A: No, I think it’s different. I understand that in China, there was some government reason. The tennis season is very long, and each year I only had 7 weeks to rest. So I want to have some time to rest and get ready for next year.

  3. Q: Last year, some WTA players complained that the season was too long. And will the WTA make some changes on the format?

A: I think the WTA will make some changes on the format on 2010, to try to shorten the season, and that’s all the players want.

  4. Q: You have been in the quarter final in the Wimbledon and the US Open. Do you think there will one Asian player win the Grand Slam in the near future?

A: Now that you can reach the quarter final, you have the chance to reach the final as well. And to win the Grand Slam is all we want, and what we’re practicing for. That’s what Li Na and me trying to do.
